Learn More About DonationsIn 2008, Darrel Schacht, who has a disability himself, was searching online for organizations that offered hunting opportunities for people with disabilities. During his search, he connected with Drew McGinnes, the founder of the Serve Outdoors (Matagorda Bay) Chapter. Drew invited Darrel on a turkey hunt, and the two quickly became friends.
At that time, Drew was working with various organizations that, despite their best efforts, had to funnel the funds they raised through a central office. Unfortunately, most of the money was diverted to projects outside the community, leaving only a small fraction for local trips. This experience inspired Darrel and Drew to take a different approach: they wanted to keep fundraising efforts and funds within the community to benefit local individuals directly.
In 2012, Darrel and his wife decided to make their vision a reality by starting the Hill Country Chapter. This chapter was launched through the unwavering support of dedicated volunteers who believed in the vision of making a difference. Despite the challenges of balancing full-time jobs and family responsibilities, these volunteers rallied together, sharing their time and energy to bring the chapter to life. Their commitment was pivotal in transforming the dream into reality, inspiring others to join the cause and contribute to the community from the very beginning.
Moving forward in 2013, their first official banquet was a success, with 80 attendees raising just enough to sustain their efforts for the year. Each subsequent year saw growth, with their next banquet attracting 200 people. The event has continued to expand, driven entirely by volunteers and donations. Today, the chapter supports not only veterans but also youth, individuals with special needs, the elderly, and more. Their commitment to community-focused support has made a significant impact, demonstrating the power of local efforts to drive meaningful change.
